32 33 STRETCH WRAP Whenever selecting film, the following variables should be taken into account: Type of product Stretchfilm type is dependent on what you are wrapping. Lighter, more fragile goods require a lower gauge of film to avoid being crushed than heavier, more solid goods that can withstand the pressure of higher gauges. Type of load There are two factors that determine load type – the weight of the load and the uniformity of its outside surface. Examples of different load types are shown to the right. Type of equipment Machine stretch levels will help determine what type of film is necessary to wrap a load. Higher gauges were once required for machines with high pre-stretch levels, whereas today we are selling thinner, tougher films which are able to endure greater levels of stretch whilst maintaining their strength. LOAD TYPES A loads have no irregularities. FILM USEFUL INFORMATION There are two types of packaging film which are determined by their manufacturing process. Both films offer great benefits, but the choice of which to use should be based on your goals, circumstances and expectations. Generally, both films offer money saving pre-stretch performance and effective load containment. They’re also suitable for a wide range of applications. Cast Film Cast film is made when sheets of heated resin are fed through a rolling path using chilled rollers that cool and solidify the film. Compared to blown film, cast is clearer which offers better clarity of the product and labels underneath. It also unwinds quieter and is soft and easy to stretch, but strong enough to resist tearing. Blown Film Blown film is made when heated resin is blown in to a bubble which is transferred in to rollers and cooled by the surrounding air. Compared to cast film, blown is tough, resilient and very resistant to puncture. It also has an exceptional cling, but makes more noise unwinding. FILM MASTER’IN CAST HAND STRETCH FILM Cast hand stretch films offer very good film clarity, allowing for product visibility during transit. Cast films are also very quiet when being unwound from a roll, which means they’re ideal for areas with high volume packing activity. Cast films are also more elastic, so can offer better stretch abilities. Extended core hand wrap allows users to apply film quicker and easier. Blown films also offer superior tack over cast films, which makes them stick to pallets and goods easier, which speeds up the wrapping process. Blown films are not as elastic as cast films, so it is easier to apply larger force on packed pallets, which makes the film perfect for use on heavier pallets and goods.
